In 1956 the German Democratic Republic issued stamps honoring composer Robert Schumann. The July 20th issue incorrectly has Schubert's "Wanderer's Nachtlied". The October 8th issue has the correct music, Schumann's "Mondnacht'.
Schumann's mental collapse kept him immobile for weeks. His dependence upon his wife Clara was crucial.
While in a hallucinatory state, he claimed voices screeched musical notes at great speed into his ears.
These imaginary companions he named Florestan (his manly self) and Eusebius (his shy self).
Schumann's diaries record in explicit detail the composer's numerous homosexual encounters with several of his male acquaintances. These sexual affairs gave Clara a much-needed rest from her numerous pregnancies.
