PUBLIUS HADRIAN
(76 - 138)
ROMAN EMPEROR

Hadrian and Marcus
Antonius

Gutter Center Block

Castle of St. Angelo,
formerly mausoleum of Emperor Hadrian.
Hadrian
was consumed with love and passion for Antinous, a Bythinian youth
handsome
beyond description. When Antinous drowned in the Nile, Hadrian
was
inconsolable. On coins of the period, his visage is shown grief-stricken
and
careworn, as from a great and sudden tragedy.
