To Combat Tuberculosis
Living
in a society that condemned homosexual relationships, Katherine Mansfield
resisted her lesbianism
by
marrying twice. The first, to George Bowden, was never consummated. Her marriage
to John Murry
also
was unsuccessful, as the author had the impractical idea that she could live
with both her husband and
her
'lifetime lover', Ida Baker, simultaneously. Mansfield had several love
affairs during her short life; she
contracted
tuberculosis and died at age 35.
